If you are an experienced investor, you may want to skip down to the "TEN KEYS TO SUCCESS"
section on how I use these internet pages, and what I look for. The key to the success is to know which funds to be in. INVEST-N-BEST offers a special Members Edition online view service, helping you make your money grow.WHAT IS A MUTUAL FUND? Simply put, a mutual fund pools the money of many people and invests it in stocks, bonds, or other securities to pursue a specific financial objective. Professional money managers select the particular securities that they believe will help the fund achieve the shareholders' "mutual" goal.
MUTUAL FUND POPULARITY Today, more than one in four American households invests in mutual funds. Both the number of investors and the amount they have invested has continued to grow since the founding of the first American mutual funds in the mid-1920s. Indeed, in 1996, America's total investments in mutual funds topped three trillion dollars!
HOW TO INVEST IN A MUTUAL FUND When you invest in a mutual fund, you purchase shares of the fund. Each share represents partial ownership of the fund's portfolio of securities - and the number of shares you own depends on the amount you invest and on the price of each share.
HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN A MUTUAL FUND When you invest in a mutual fund, you can make money in up to three ways - two based on your fund manager's decisions and one based on your own.
TAXES COST & RISK OF OWNERSHIP Unlike bank accounts, mutual funds, including money market funds, are neither insured nor guaranteed by an agency of the U.S. government. In addition, mutual funds are subject to the risks of the underlying securities that they hold in their portfolios. So, stock funds, for example, may exhibit considerable price fluctuations over time - often called market risk. In addition, all mutual funds are subject to "manager risk," which is the potential for a fund to fail to achieve its objective due to investment decisions by the investment adviser.
WHAT IS A MONEY MARKET? Money market funds are one of the most widely held type of mutual fund. Money market funds, or money funds as they are sometimes called, invest in short-term securities of credit-worthy corporations, bank obligations, debt instruments of the Federal government, and other highly liquid, low-risk securities.
INTRODUCING BONDS A bond is an investment security that requires the issuer to pay the bondholder a fixed amount of interest periodically, and to repay the principal value of the bond on a specific maturity date. Bonds are considered "fixed-income securities" (that is, they offer a steady rate of interest income), and are sometimes called "debt obligations" (they represent a loan to the bond issuer).
COMMON STOCKS A common stock represents your right of ownership in a corporation. When you own shares of a corporation's common stock, you share in its profits, some of which may be distributed to you as dividends, with the remainder reinvested in the business to build the value of your investment. The market value of the stock will depend on many factors, including the company's profitability and growth prospects, as well as conditions in the overall stock market. As an owner, of course, you will also share in potential declines in the company's market value.
INVESTMENT RISKS All investments carry an element of risk. Generally speaking, to seek greater rewards - such as a higher investment return - you must be willing to assume greater risk. And, if you wish to minimize risk, you must be willing to accept lower returns.
DEFINING MUTUAL FUND COSTS There are two broad classes of mutual fund costs: "loads" charged when you buy or sell shares, and expenses incurred in the fund's daily operation. The impact of these costs is anything but trivial and may be demonstrated quite clearly. First, however, you need to identify some of the costs involved in mutual fund investing.
READING MUTUAL FUND DOCUMENTS Mutual funds produce a number of different types of documents that provide you with important information on how the fund operates and its status. These documents, like many legal documents, can be cumbersome to read, even for experienced investors.
TRACKING NEWSPAPER FUND LISTINGS Keeping track of your mutual fund investments is as easy as opening your morning newspaper. Most major newspapers carry a table that lists mutual funds alphabetically by fund family.
TEN KEYS TO SUCCESS RETURN TO TOP
This is written with the experience investor in mind. Not only were sector funds some of the best performing funds last year, they have been the most consistent overachievers since their inception in the mid 80's. We can accomplish this sector buying thru mutual funds. There are a few simple rules that we follow and which you can find along with the funds recommended in the MEMBERS EDITION:
- Invest with the Generals--Stick with only Top Generals in the Members Edition. We show only the funds that lead in each sector. We ignore all the others
.- Buy Funds that have high Relative Strength Numbers. We use special FastTrack and FastTools ranking systems to see the first screen funds. If it is not on the first screen, it is not important to us.
.- The Manager on Top ( General) has the Right Strategy, therefore why invest in any other? You will know weekly and monthly the best performing Money Managers.
- Manage the Generalr, Not the fund. Upgrade if he falls below your benchmark, usually--SP-500 INDEX. Don't fall in love with your fund or your Manager. If he underperforms he will drop out of the first screen.
- Remember to examine the Family Sector First. Find out which Sector is in the Uptrend. We show you weekly in the Members Edition which are the best sectors.
- Once known, review all the Funds at the Top of the Technical charts.
- We then purchase those Funds .
- Continue to hold the funds until they stop performing better than your benchmark .
- Hold several funds for diversification. We show over many models in the Members Edition.
- Liquidate the Fund when a stronger one is in uptrend. This is called upgrading. .
.I repeat...all these can be accomplished by using INVEST-N-BEST pages and following the strategies in the Members Edition.
If it all rather sounds so simple. It is!! The approach we take in the market is that we need to know what family or sector is in the uptrend. That is the purpose of the charts and families listed on the Members pages. Once that is established the selection of the funds are simple.
We also use several trading models with different risk levels and parameters. These are discussed and reviewed weekly . These mechanical trading systems eliminated emotions in the market. You can choose one of the trading systems that meet your risk level. Once you choose the level of risk, you invest in the fund the trading model selects and hold on to it until the trading model tells you to upgrade.
Summary: WHY INVESTORS FAIL ? RETURN TO TOP
If you are like most investors, you probally have found it very difficult to select good investments. Research has shown that there are nine major reasons why investors particularly small investors, often make foolish decisions:
- Failure to develop a sound strategy.
- Bearing either too much or too little risk.
- Poor investment selection.
- Poor timing.
- Inadequate diversification.
- High transaction costs.
- Poor advisors.
- Failure to control emotions.
- Paying excessive taxes.
The typical investor does not possess the knowledge, time, or desire to undertake the research necessary to avoid these errors. So what recourse does he or she have?
Our approach is to invest in the top performing, no or low load mutual funds during favorable periods in the stock market. During down or sideways markets, the majority of our money is placed in high yielding money market funds or funds in a favorable trend. This is called UPGRADING.
The objective is to reap substantial profits in rising markets and to protect these gains during serious pullbacks.
The four key steps in the process of selecting our funds are:
- 1. Identify those funds whose objective coincide with our own
- 2. Identify the best performing funds (leading Generals) using the most advance technical analysis
- 3. Screen the best performers (Generals) for their general suitability
- 4. Carefully evaluate the remaining funds and monitor them for future selection.
The INVEST-N-BEST approach, therefore, is to combine the talents of the country's leading money managers to achieve superior returns. I upgrade from good funds to better funds by progressively selling lagging funds and buying ones storming ahead. Our "upgrading" strategy is a very logical system of investing with top managers while they are performing well, and moving to others when the original choices are no longer the best. Upgrading moves us incrementally toward the funds that are best positioned in the current market environment. This process provides an effective way to participate successfully in a broad range of opportunities as they develop. It's possible only because of the minimal transaction costs using no-load funds.
